NSAFS featured in Evening Standard

Sylvia Perrins, CEO of the National Skills Academy for Financial Services (NSAFS) and Jennifer Lavelle, an apprentice at Aon, featured in an article for the Evening Standard on the 12th of January about skills shortages in the City and the drive to produce new talent for the financial services industry.

The article focuses on the fact that the financial services sector is finding it hard to find people with the right skills despite high unemployment, particularly among graduates and school leavers.

The NSAFS’ lead training provider for London, Tower Hamlets College, is cited for its financial services courses which have helped hundreds of graduates and school leavers get the right skills and qualifications to break into the industry. The work placement scheme at Tower Hamlets College is another way that the NSAFS helps young people gain real experience by working in the industry and answers employer demand for local people in local jobs.

The NSAFS’s work around apprenticeships is also highlighted, with a focus on Jennifer Lavelle, an apprentice working at Aon. Jennifer is currently in the second and final year of her Apprenticeship in Retail Financial Services. Jennifer says: ‘The key benefits for me are that I am gaining qualifications, getting hands-on experience and working in a large company where there is room for development’.

As well as the NSAFS’ drive for new talent, Sylvia Perrins talks about the “up-skilling” agenda through the NSAFS leadership and management programme. This programme provides an opportunity for people already working in the industry to improve their skills and get an industry-recognised qualification.
