Stephen Smith
Regional Director - South East
Region: South East
Tel: 07525 990 479
Stephen’s career in financial services has put skills development at the forefront of the businesses and employees he has managed.
Within 18 months of his appointment, Stephen had established a participative Regional Employers’ Board reflecting the various sub sectors of financial services, including large and small employers.
Regional provision complements the national provision and has responded to employers’ needs with over 300 financial service Apprenticeships commencing, as well as employers buying into the National Skills Academy for Financial Services (NSAFS)’ leadership and management offer which had been successfully piloted in the region.
In 2010, the Regional Employers’ Board will be looking to consider ten regional expressions of interest from both public and private provision to achieve a minimum of a further four regional providers.
Stephen also develops and maintains relationships with the South East Regional Development Agency (SEEDA), the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) South East, both of whom have financial services as a priority sector and are supportive of the Skills Academy. He also liaises with the regional Apprenticeship service, the new Skills Funding Agency and other regional stakeholders.
Stephen joined the NSAFS in 2008 having previously been Regional Manager South with the Financial Services Skills Council for almost four years. Prior to this, he was Sales and Training Director at Moorgate House (a major independent financial advisor) from 1998 and set up Allied Irish Banks’ independent advice company from 1990. Before that, he worked in various roles with Prudential, National Mutual Life and Canada Life.
Stephen has an honours degree in Politics from the University of Warwick.
