As the largest training provider in the South West, City of Bristol College is well placed to serve the needs of financial services employers, and has sites across the city of Bristol.

The College is one of only four colleges in the South West to be awarded the new Training Quality Standard achieved in May 2008.

Courses aimed at the financial services sector can be delivered in-company as well as at College sites:

College Green Centre
Ashley Down Centre
Soundwell Centre

After a recent £6 million modernisation, the Soundwell Centre in particular offers state-of-the-art facilities, including purpose-built classrooms, workshops and impressive learning resource centre’s.

History

City of Bristol College has been operating for more than ten years, following several mergers of Bristol colleges.

Students for financial services courses come from the large industry base that is situated in Bristol; including banks, insurance companies, building societies and brokers.

We work with financial services employers to improve their business, Royal Bank of Scotland and Allianz already work with us.

The College has achieved Centre’s of Vocational Excellence in three areas including Management and has also achieved:
Learning and Skills Beacon Award
Member of the 157 group of leading colleges
Outstanding Ofsted Inspection: Grade 1 for Leadership and Management

Our work with the Financial Services industry

City of Bristol College works with many companies in the financial services sector to help them improve their business through staff training. A few examples include:

Allianz, the large insurance company, work with the College on a range of NVQ programmes and are also in discussion with the College and the National Skills Academy to develop Apprenticeship programmes, designed specifically for the financial sector.

Computershare, the share registrar business, has put 90 employees through NVQ programmes to improve their skills and increase staff retention.

Royal Bank of Scotland has recently undertaken an in-company programme that will give its first line managers a nationally recognised qualification from the Chartered Management Institute.

Working as a Skills Academy provider

After joining the network in 2007, City of Bristol College is the lead training provider for the National Skills Academy for Financial Services in the South West.

City of Bristol College was keen to build on its years of experience working with many local employers in the financial services sector. It works to help improve the skills of new recruits, staff development including management training and works with the Skills Academy Employer Board to help understand employers’ training needs and issues that are affecting the industry country wide so it can further improve its provision for the financial services employers.

Our Objectives

Is to work with the Skills Academy Employer Board to identity the most effective way to deliver training within the sector.

We will:

• Collaborate with other providers in the South West to develop and share best practice across the region.

• Develop new training provision to meet the sector’s needs.

• Ensure organisations in the sector are aware of the training solutions that are available.

• Deliver training, either in-company, and via open courses that help the sector to develop and grow through the uncertain economic times ahead.

Whats next

City of Bristol College has already designed courses tailored to the needs of the financial services sector such as Managing in the Financial Services sector. The next developments include:

• Sector specific NVQs such as Retail Financial Services.
• Financial Services Apprenticeships at Levels 2 & 3
• Foundation Degree in Financial Services
• Financial Pathways being developed in National Diplomas
• Coaching for the Owner/Manager, Senior Manager of SMEs using Leadership and Management Funding.
